“Rangers are the silent guardians of the wild, walking with purpose, watching with wisdom, and risking their lives on the front line of extinction, protecting with a courage that asks for no recognition, only results.”

-Dan Mousley

Our Ranger Family

At the heart of our conservation efforts stand a quiet force of dedication and resilience, our rangers. These men and women are the unsung heroes of rhino protection, walking the land day after day, often in extreme heat or pouring rain, tracking each and every rhino under our care.

Their mission is simple yet vital: to locate, observe, and report back on the well-being of our rhinos. Each footprint, broken branch, and dung pile tells a story—and our rangers read it like a book. They know the territories, temperaments, and habits of each individual animal. If a rhino is missing, injured, or behaving unusually, they are the first to know and act.

Beyond monitoring, their presence is a powerful deterrent to poachers. Quietly patrolling the vast terrain, they form the first and most crucial line of defence. Their intimate knowledge of the land and its inhabitants is irreplaceable, built over years of experience and unshakable commitment.

They do this work not for accolades or praise, but for the love of wildlife and the future of rhinos. It is a job of vigilance, endurance, and heart and without them, none of this would be possible.

We were much honoured recently to have the celebrated Texan conservationists Britt and Ricardo Longoria visit us at Gamsberg.

This is what they had to say:

Our recent visit with the Hurts at their Private Conservancy in Namibia was a truly inspiring experience. Witnessing their tremendous conservation work firsthand left us deeply impressed by their dedication to preserving not just rhinos, but all wildlife and their habitats. The Hurts’ commitment to restoring and protecting large, interconnected ecosystems is extraordinary, and their efforts highlight the vital role private conservancies play in wildlife conservation. From their focus on anti-poaching measures to sustainable habitat management, it was a privilege to see their hard work making such a profound impact.

We are also excited to share that the Longoria-Hosmer Foundation has pledged support to the Hurts’ "Habitat for Rhino" initiative in Namibia, as well as the Robin Hurt Foundation in Tanzania. We are honored to assist by channeling donations through our US-based 501(c)(3) charity at no cost or deduction, to help further this critical conservation work. Partnering with passionate conservationists like Robin and Pauline strengthens our shared mission to safeguard wilderness and wildlife for generations to come.
